Fahrettin Altun, who was removed in July from the Directorate of Communications he founded and from his post at the Center for Combating Disinformation, is expected to be appointed Turkey’s ambassador to the Vatican, according to several diplomatic sources.
A Foreign Ministry official familiar with the matter did not deny that Ankara has requested agrément from the Vatican for Altun’s appointment, in response to Turkey in Depth’s questions.
Altun, who shaped Turkey’s state media and messaging strategy as head of the Directorate of Communications since 2018, was appointed chair of the Human Rights and Equality Institution in July—a move widely seen as a demotion. He was succeeded by Deputy Foreign Minister Burhanettin Duran.
