Amid renewed clashes between the Syrian government and Kurdish-led militia in Aleppo, the Turkish Defense Ministry said that the Turkish army would support the operation if Damascus requested assistance.

At its weekly press conference on Jan. 8, the ministry described the clashes in Aleppo as a “counterterrorism operation.”

The operation was carried out entirely by the Syrian Army, according to the ministry: “Syria's security is our security. Turkey supports Syria's fight against terrorist organizations based on the principle of one state and one army, and on the basis of Syria's unity and territorial integrity.”
