Turkey promoted Colonel Gülden Mat Şakir to become the second female brigadier general in Turkish Armed Forces history.

The decision was one of a number of appointments published in the official gazette on July 31 with the signature of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Şakır follows Özlem Yılmaz, who was promoted to the rank of brigadier general at the Gendarmerie last year.

Şakir was appointed to the Personnel Center Directorate, where Yılmaz currently serves, while Yılmaz was moved to a passive position, indicating that she might be retired soon. Yılmaz was assigned to serve under the Gendarmerie General Command, which means she will not have any active duty.
