Ahead of CHP’s hesitations to join the parliamentary commission, DEM Party Co-Chair Tuncer Bakırhan said that the party will maintain its opposition identity even if the process is successful.
Bakırhan discussed the constitutional revision in an interview with T24. Bakırhan stated that the matter will eventually be brought before the DEM and that they will not approve the constitutional amendment if it does not satisfy their demands regarding the Kurdish issue, democratization, women's rights, youth, Alevis' right to equal citizenship, economic justice, and the environment.
He called on the CHP to sit down at the table and said he understood their concerns about the process because of the pressures they have been under lately.
Pointing out that everyone, including the CHP, should be at the table to stop the bad course of events in the country, Bakırhan said: 'The table is like a political mat. Whoever runs away from the mat loses. If we want to win peace, we need to be on the mat.'
He added that CHP’s involvement could lead to the release of political prisoners like Ekrem İmamoğlu, saying it would signal a return to law and democracy.
Emphasizing that DEM is an opposition party, Bakırhan said that even if this process is successful, the party will maintain its opposition identity.
He responded to İmamoğlu's remarks as “You should separate yourself from the mindset that sees this process as an opportunity for their own political fortunes and political interests,” by saying, “He stands in a place that sees and evaluates the political events wrongly.”
DEM: DEMOCRATIC STEPS NEEDED TO BUILD TRUST
The DEM Party said the process needs rapid democratic steps to build trust.
After a DEM Party assembly, the party called on the ruling bloc: “The government must act immediately to take tangible democratic steps in order for the entire society to participate in the process in a stronger, more devoted, and more determined manner.”
The parliamentary commission to be established will have a historic function, the statement said, adding that the party will make every effort to support the commission.
According to the statement, “The July 11th burning of the guns in Sulaymaniyah is the declaration of a bold and decisive closure of half a century of conflict.”
The conclusion of the conflict process is significant historically, and the accomplishment of the legal arrangements necessary for this step will open the door for democracy, the statement said.
The statement stressed that following these legislative frameworks, the necessary steps to guarantee a long-term and democratic resolution to the Kurdish issue will be deliberated and carried out in a democratic setting.
