In their first call since unrest spread across Iran, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, that Turkey does not support any scenario involving external intervention in Iran, according to a statement from the Turkish Presidency on Jan. 22.
Erdoğan said Ankara closely monitors developments in Iran and views the country’s peace and stability as a priority. He added that resolving domestic issues through dialogue and preventing further regional escalation also align with Turkey’s interests.
The statement from Ankara emphasized opposition to any military action against Iran. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan also reiterated last week that Ankara supports efforts to preserve regional stability.
Protests erupted in Iran in late December amid economic hardship and currency depreciation, later taking on a political dimension and turning violent.
