Presidential advisor Mehmet Uçum has weighed in on the possibility of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan running for office again. In a post on X, Uçum said no constitutional change is required for Erdoğan to seek another term.

“If Parliament votes to renew the elections in late 2027 with at least 360 deputies in favor, and if President Erdoğan chooses to run, he can do so under the current constitution,” Uçum said.

He emphasized that Erdoğan doesn’t need to run again—but that the country might:

“His leadership and experience remain vital for Turkey, especially at this critical time. This isn’t about personal ambition.”

Uçum also rejected claims that a new constitution is being prepared to enable Erdoğan’s candidacy:

“These claims are false. The current constitution already allows for what we call an ‘exceptional candidacy.’”
