NATO promptly reacted by condemning Iran after a missile targeted the Turkish border.
In response to questions from Turkey in Depth, the alliance confirmed its support for Turkey and condemned the incident.
“We condemn Iran’s targeting of Türkiye. NATO stands firmly with all Allies, including Türkiye, as Iran continues its indiscriminate attacks across the region. Our deterrence and defence posture remains strong across all domains, including when it comes to air and missile defence,” NATO spokesperson Allison Hart said.
A ballistic munition launched from Iran and heading toward Turkish airspace through Iraq and Syria was intercepted by NATO air and missile defense elements deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean, according to Turkey’s Defense Ministry.
The ministry said the missile crossed Iraqi and Syrian airspace before being detected approaching Turkey. NATO assets engaged the threat in time and neutralized it in the air. Debris from an interceptor missile later fell in an open area in the Dörtyol district of Hatay province. Turkey said there were no casualties or injuries.
FIDAN STRESSES REACTION TO IRAN
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi to convey Turkey’s reaction and called for steps to prevent further escalation in the region soon after the incident.
The Turkish government said it remains in consultation with NATO and allied partners as tensions linked to the ongoing regional conflict continue to rise.
