President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan appointed a new national police chief and reassigned several governors and provincial police directors in a presidential decree published in the Official Gazette on April 30.

Under the decision, Ali Fidan was named head of the General Directorate of Security, replacing Mahmut Demirtaş, who was reassigned to the Interior Ministry.

The reshuffle also included changes to four governorships. Ankara Governor Vasip Şahin was appointed head of the Human Rights and Equality Institution, while Yakup Canbolat moved from Aydın to Ankara. Other appointments followed a chain of replacements across Aydın, Adıyaman and Nevşehir.

Seven provincial police chiefs were also reassigned. Ankara Police Chief Engin Dinç was removed, with Konya’s Maksut Yüksek taking over the post. Yüksek will also be responsible for the security of 32 world leaders as Ankara will host the NATO summit on July 7-8. Changes were also made in Mersin, Siirt, Yozgat, Manisa and Elazığ.

Fidan, a former governor and senior interior ministry official, previously served as the first civilian undersecretary of the Defense Ministry. He most recently held the post of Nevşehir governor.
