İsmet Sayhan, former president of the state-owned Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation (MKE) and a close associate of MHP Chair Devlet Bahçeli, has been arrested.
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office said Sayhan was referred to court on charges of “destroying, misusing, and fraudulently obtaining documents related to state security.” A criminal court ordered his arrest on Aug. 27.
Sayhan is the second figure close to Bahçeli to be detained this month. On Aug. 8, Selahattin Yılmaz — another Bahçeli-backed figure — was arrested as part of a corruption probe into Istanbul and other CHP-run municipalities.
Pro-government media reported Sayhan had worked for defense company ASSAN, which MKE banned from tenders for two years over supply failures. He is accused of leaking state secrets, including long-term artillery shell procurement plans for the Turkish Armed Forces, after nine MKE employees allegedly moved to ASSAN under questionable circumstances.
