An attack was carried out on the Izmir office of the leftist newspaper Evrensel at around 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 14.

The outdoor sign of the office was shot at. The sign and door had twenty bullet holes.

The two attackers fled the scene. The attack was captured on security cameras at a nearby business.

The police recognized the suspects as İsa Can and İbrahim Halil Yapıcı. Yapıcıoğlu was taken into custody by the police. Can was identified as the weapon's user in the event, and efforts are still underway to capture him.

Evrensel’s Izmir bureau chief Özer Akdemir made a statement to the police and then filed a complaint.

Founded in 1995, Evrensel is a daily affiliated with the EMEP Party (Labor Party), which defines itself as the representative of workers. The death of an Evrensel journalist, Metin Göktepe, under police custody in 1996 caused public outcry.
