Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University launched an investigating after musician Kaan Tangöze altered the lyrics of the song “Baltalar Elimizde” (The Axes Are in Our Hands) during a concert on campus, prompting political backlash.
The 52-year-old lead singer of alt-rock group Duman revised the words of the song to criticize government policies. The video showing Tangöze singing the song went viral.
Memur-Sen Chair Ali Yalçın condemned both the artist and the university, calling the performance a provocation. Amid growing criticism, the university said it had only rented out the hall to a private organizer and was not involved in the event. It described the accusations as a “smear campaign” and announced that an administrative inquiry had been launched.
